TitlePartner selection for innovation: A competitor or a supplier?

Abstract

In this presentation, I will present a multi-method working paper about an innovation outsourcing partner selection problem. With an innovation outsourcing task on hand, the focal firm faces a choice between a competitor and a regular component supplier. We built an analytical math model to present the conditions for when a competitor is preferred over a regular supplier, which lead to three hypotheses. Then we test these hypotheses by a set of vignette-based experiments with purchasing managers. Experimental results offer behavioral explanations for why actual selection behaviors align or differ from those predicted by the analytical model. This talk should be of value to faculty members who are interested in developing new theories and/or testing theories by using a multi-method approach. Using this working paper as an example, I will end the talk with a few advice, both from an author and a journal EIC's view, to junior faculty and PhD students about how to survive a multi-year top journal review process.
